Last year saw the Isle of Man TT celebrate its centenary. 2008 sees the return of familiar faces and some promising newcomers. John McGuiness will be the man to beat.

2008 sees the beginning of a new century of racing for the Isle of Man TT and it looks set to be as exciting as ever. John McGuinness is a strong favourite to add to his tally of 13 TT victories, including two last year. His main competition may well be Guy Martin, who will be confident about improving on his three podium finishes in 2007. Ian Hutchinson will also be a man to watch. Last year’s event saw him claim his maiden victory on the island.

Apart from improvements to the road surface the TT circuit has changed little during its 101 year history. The late, great Joey Dunlop remains the most successful rider of all time over the island's tortuous 37 mile layout. Following the tragic loss of David Jefferies during practice for the 2003 event McGuinness has emerged as the master of the modern era.

Expectations are high that the 131 mph barrier may be broken this year. The 130mph average was shattered by John McGuiness last year in the Senior TT. Meanwhile, in the superstock class the clear favourite is New Zealander Bruce Anstey, who has dominated the race in recent years.

One of the most intriguing battles looks to be fought in the sidecar class. Veteran TT expert Dave Molyneux will be fast but, in Andy Smith, he has a new partner and the duo may take time to gel. For the first time in TT history Sidecar World Champions will be competing. Klaus Klaffenbock and Christian Parzer have steadily improved their results since their TT debut while Tim Reeves is a newcomer to the island, partnered by Patrick Farrance.

The most unpredictable races may be the Lightweight and Ultra-Lightweight TT's. Following a three year absence the classes make a welcome return. The races will be staged on the shorter Billown circuit. Classic racing machinery will also be participating in the festivities.

Away from the circuit there will be plenty to keep spectators entertained. In addition to the air displays and stunts shows Status Quo and Athlete have both been confirmed to play. Mad Sunday will be as frenetic as ever while the ever popular Purple Helmets will provide plenty of laughs. Organisers will, as ever, be hoping for agreeable weather and a safe meeting for everyone involved.
